With the pandemic limiting travel options this summer, we searched for a new outdoor day trip from Nashville. We discovered the magnificent 75-foot Stillhouse Hollow Falls, just an hour away. It was a fun family adventure.
The Scenic Stillhouse Hollow Falls
Stillhouse Falls has a beautiful 75-foot waterfall that cascades gently down like a light shower. At the base is a small, knee-deep “swimming hole” to wade in and enjoy the lovely view.
Getting to Stillhouse Hollow Falls State Natural Area
Stillhouse Hollow Falls is located northeast of Summertown, TN, about 21 miles southwest of Columbia. We took I-40 W and TN-7, roughly an hour and 15 minute drive from Nashville.
Watch for the tiny Stillhouse Hollow Falls Trail turnoff, which looks almost like a driveway. A small brown sign indicates you’ve arrived. The small parking area fits around 25 cars maximum.
Hiking the Scenic Stillhouse Hollow Falls Trail
The hike to the falls is an easy 0.7 miles, but with some steep, unrailed sections requiring caution. Leashed dogs are allowed.
The trail offers a view from above the falls, then continues down to a bridge over the stream below. My daughter enjoyed hunting for fossils and rocks in the creek.
My son loved crawling along the ledge behind the falling water. My husband spotted a snake near the falls. I enjoyed watching my family while listening to the soothing water sounds.
Stop in Charming Leiper’s Fork on the Drive Back
On the drive back, we stopped in the lovely village of Leiper’s Fork for a tasty meal. Check out the shops, distillery, and galleries in this quaint arts community.
We enjoyed grilled sandwiches from the century-old Davis General Store and coffee drinks at RedByrd Coffee’s outdoor tables while the kids played at the park. A fun family day trip!
